The most common types of breast implants are either saline or silicone. here are also variants of implants called “form stable” which are implants that come in various contours such as a teardrop or “gummy bear” shape.

Silicone breast implants have been a highly popular breast implant option for years. Many patients say they look and feel the most like “real breasts.” Silicone implants are filled with a gel silicone that feels a bit like a gummy bear. Silicone implants are filled with a certain number of cc’s to the requested size. One benefit of new generation silicone implants is that if it breaks or ruptures (which is rare), the silicone stays within the implant shell. Silicone breast implants are used in the vast majority of our surgeries.

Saline breast implants are filled with a solution of water and salt. The implant is an empty shell that is filled with the desired amount of cc’s after insertion. Saline is similar to the plasma in the body, which is a major benefit for some patients. Should the breast implant leak, the body can safely absorb the saline.

Form Stable Implants

Dubbed the “gummy bear implant,” these breast implants are created with a gel that is thicker than the standard gel implants. Newer generation “gummy bear implants” maintain their intended shape and can be used to create a more natural look in some patients and a more augmented look in others depending on implant choice. We offer this procedure upon request, but our surgeons set clear expectations regarding results. For breast rejuvenation, an implant is typically preferred by our surgeons due the reliability of the final result for the patient. When using the patient’s own fat for breast augmentation, the final result depends on several factors, such as how much fat survives the procedure long-term. This is one of the main factors that make it more difficult to predict the outcome for the patient and why Dr. Neaman and Dr. Christiansen generally prefer to perform breast augmentation with implants.
